Excerpt from The Commercial Appeal:

President Barack Obama nominated U.S. Atty.Edward L. Stanton III on Thursday to become a federal district judge for the Western District of Tennessee.

“I am confident he will serve the American people with integrity and a steadfast commitment to justice,” Obama said in a statement released by the White House.

The nomination must be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

Stanton has served as U.S. attorney for the Western District of Tennessee for the past five years, making him the chief federal law-enforcement officer within the 22 counties that comprise the district.

He is a lifelong Memphis resident, a graduate of Central High School, and, according to the official biography on his office Web page, landed his first job at Elvis Presley’s Graceland.

Before becoming U.S. attorney, Stanton was senior counsel in the litigation department of FedEx, where he worked from 2002 to 2010.

“Ed Stanton has proven himself to be an outstanding lawyer both as U.S. Attorney and as senior litigator for FedEx,” said U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Memphis, who recommended Stanton for the job after convening a screening committee of local attorneys.
