The Humane Society of the United States has given Congressman Cohen a 100% score for his votes on animal rights issues in the 2007 session of Congress.

In recognition of his sponsoring the Sportsmanship in Hunting Act which bans “canned hunts“, the Humane Society has announced that he will receive a 2007 Humane Champion Award. For those unfamiliar with the term, a canned hunt is one in which the prey is caged, and in some extreme cases, abused or drugged so that there is no chance of escape.

“As a longtime member of the Humane Society, I’m deeply honored that they have chosen to highlight my work in this way,” Congressman Cohen said. “The humane treatment of animals has always been important to me.”

The Humane Society based the score on its Legislative Score Card on several key votes in Congress’s 2007 session, including bills to ban animal fighting and a ban on the export of horses to be slaughtered for human consumption in other nations.
